I have just come across it in a poem by Elizabeth Bishop - line 14 of the poem "Anaphora" is "sinks through the drift of vles." Dictionary and encyclopedia searches have drawn a blank. I thought it may have been a misprint for "cles" (C and P are next door on the keyboard) but online versions of the verse all have "vles". Am I being really stupid or ignorant here? Can anyone help? Thanks.
