Should i get a cat with sinus trouble?

I am considering getting a 9 mth old cat, from a friend who cant keep him. She tells me though that he has a sinus infection. Gooey eyes. Does anyone know what treatment this would need? I really dont want to take a sick cat? Thanks in Advance
