What are the legalities and do or should I have a lawyer for guardianship?

I have a 15 year old daughter, who has been in legal trouble since about June of this year. Just recently my exhusband not my daughters biological father started joining me. The last time we went to court was because my daughter ran away and when we went to court they were going to release my daughter to either me or my exhusband on an ankle monitor. She told the judge he wasnt her biological father, so in the state of Indiana they legally could not let her leave with with him. My daughter doesnt want to go live with him because he has more control then I do and doesnt let her get away with the stuff she tries to at my house. I want to make him her legal guardian as well and was told its easier than an adoption and gives her stepdad as much rights to her in court as myself. What are the legalities and do I have to have a lawyer to file the paperwork myself? Please need this done before December 3 2010
